Luke 18:24 – 25
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said,
How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye,
than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
This statement by Jesus seems very far fetch, but He is pointing out a very important point here, which we today perhaps don’t want to see, or want to acknowledge. Jesus says that it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle – than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom. Why is it so difficult for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of the Lord, we may ask, but Jesus already had the understanding, the knowledge and the reason for making such a statement?
Prior to Jesus uttering these words, the young rich man, whose name is not mentioned, asks Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life (Luke 18 : 18). Jesus gives him the commandments and he responds by stating that he’s already abiding to the commandments. Jesus knowing everything then tells him, that he lacks one thing, (the reason why it’s so difficult for rich people to enter into eternal life) – he is told that he should sell all his possessions and distribute the income amongst the poor. Knowing the hearts of rich people that their hearts rests in their possessions (For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also – Matthew 6 : 21 ), Jesus made this statement testing the young man’s willingness to give up all that he have and give it away to follow Jesus, lots of hesitation were raised from the rich young man – he was not willing to let go of all that he had, he wasn’t willing to make the sacrifice, and that is exactly the problem Jesus saw coming. People living in riches, being it inherited, or achieved through hard work would not easily get rid of all his achievement through his hard work.
For a person to be successful on earth, it is usually determined by his riches, by what he had gathered here on earth, the treasure of men usually is the main contributor to being full of pride, being boastful, having the feeling of being better or on a higher level than the next person. Jesus thus has good reason why He stated that it is easier for a camel to go through a needle than for the rich to go to heaven. If you look at the verse of discussion, you will notice that He mentions the impossible here – ask yourself the question, is it possible for a camel to go through the eye of a needle? My friend you don’t even have to think about this question, the answer is plain and simple – NO! No in capital letters, no camel could ever, nor will any ever be able to go through the eye of a needle.
Based on this conclusion – it is actually shocking and heartbreaking to get to the bottom of this – based on faith and trust in the Lord and based on biblical conviction, I can honestly and sincerely say that Jesus is not a man that He could lie – Jesus is not a person who can make up lies and sell it as the truth, so when He says something, be assured that it is 100 percent fact. Be assured it is bound to come to pass.
